Ophthalmology Fellowship
The primary goal of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University is to provide supervised, clinical training in the examination, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of ocular and visual system disorders in infants and children. This also includes eye movement disorders and strabismus in adults.
The fellowship program requires the fellow to supervise and instruct students and residents and to participate in administrative aspects of medical care. The fellow is also provided an environment in which to learn and participate in both clinical and basic science research.
The Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship receives accreditation from the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Fellowship Compliance Committee (AUPO FCC). The Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship is approved by the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and supported by Nationwide Children's Hospital. The fellow is an employee of Nationwide Children's Hospital and is part of The Ohio State University's academic environment. The training period is one academic year (July 1 to June 30).
What You Need to Know
Training and Experience
The Nationwide Children's Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and Pediatric Ophthalmology Associates are very busy clinical services and are responsible for approximately 700 outpatients visits, 60 operations, 30 ROP exams, 20 emergency room visits and 20 hospital consultations per week. This patient activity is all under the supervision of multiple staff personnel and are the strengths of the clinical fellowship program. There are multiple, regularly occurring specialty clinics in which the fellow will participate. Some include craniofacial, low vision, retina, glaucoma and oculoplastics.
Education
Educational activities are the daily part of fellow activity. The fellow participates directly and has a supervisory role in Ophthalmology Clinic with Ophthalmology residents. The fellow will also participate directly and assume a supervisory role in coverage of hospital and emergency room consults, assist staff with surgery and perform outpatient clinical care. The fellow will be required to organize journal club, attend grand rounds and lectures.
Research
The department has a very active national grant and locally supported clinical and basic science research service. The department is currently participating in seven multicenter trials in ROP, amblyopia, myopia and glaucoma. Fundamental investigations of the developing visual and ocular motor systems are being carried out by departmental personnel with the help of undergraduate, graduate and medical students and residents using highly sophisticated electrophysiological and radiological techniques.
The fellow will also participate in a clinical or basic science research project during their fellowship with the intent of finishing the project within the fellowship period.
About Nationwide Children's
Nationwide Children's Hospital is the only pediatric tertiary health care provider in central Ohio. The hospital is one of the largest pediatric facilities in the United States. It is certified as a Level I Trauma Center and serves as the major pediatric referral center for south central Ohio, with a catchment area that extends into West Virginia and Kentucky. The hospital serves many children with eye and visual system diseases. Fellows are able to interact with professionals and patients from urban, suburban, and rural settings.

Advocacy
Advocacy training fosters and encourages interest in child advocacy by early involvement and exposure to its many aspects such as addressing social determinants of health, community collaboration, health finance, health policy and legislative advocacy.
