Biography

Madhumita Basu, PhD, is a Principal Investigator and Research Assistant Professor in the Center for Cardiovascular Research at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute in Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Basu completed her Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Calcutta, India, where she studied the genetic association, gene-gene (GXG) interaction and functionality of the disease associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the innate immune response pathway genes (TNF-alpha, LTA, TLR2, TLR4 and IL12B) in Plasmodium falciparum-infected malaria patients. In 2013, Dr. Basu moved to the United States and she joined the team of Vidu Garg, MD, Principal Investigator in The Center for Cardiovascular Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, as a postdoctoral scientist. Dr. Basu worked on examining a gene-environment interaction between maternal pre-existing diabetes and Notch1 heterozygosity in the embryos and identified nitric oxide-Jarid2-Notch1 epigenetic axis that lead to maternal hyperglycemia associated congenital heart defects. In 2018, Dr. Basu received a Career Development Award from the American Heart Association and Children’s Heart foundation and transitioned as a Principal Investigator at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
