Biography

Jeff Burnside BS, CCP, FPP, is a member of the Cardiovascular Perfusion Department at The Heart Center at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH). After receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Ohio University in 1983 he worked as a research assistant in the Wexner Pediatric Research Institute at NCH. In 1989 he was accepted into The Ohio State University’s Circulation Technology Program where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medicine/Perfusion Technology in 1991. Jeff then became a member of the perfusion team at NCH in August 1991 as a staff perfusionist . In 1992 he completed the NCH institutional ECMO program and in addition to his cardiopulmonary bypass duties became a member of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) team. He has also been the academic affairs coordinator overseeing all aspects of our student perfusion educational rotations and is a clinical instructor for three major perfusion programs in the US. He was responsible for instituting and maintaining the accreditation of our perioperative blood management program through The American Association of Blood Banks for nearly 18 years. His research interests focus on minimization of extracorporeal circuitry and techniques to aid in the achievement of bloodless pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery. Jeff has authored several papers on novel techniques for improving currently available pediatric CPB devices. He is also a member of the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology (AmSECT).
