Fellowship Benefits

Fellows training in graduate medical education and dental education programs sponsored by Nationwide Children’s Hospital are employees of the hospital and as such are eligible the same benefits that other full time staff receive – with the exception of paid time off which is outlined below.

Description

Competitive Salary Nationwide Children's offers salaries competitive with other hospitals in the region, including The Ohio State University Medical Center.  Fellows receive compensation based upon post-graduate year (see Housestaff Salary Scale).  Fellows with international residency experience or other postgraduate training years should consult with the Program Director regarding salary.
Paid time off

Fellows training in graduate medical education and dental education programs sponsored by Nationwide Children’s Hospital are employees of the hospital and as such are eligible the same benefits that other full time staff receive – with the exception of paid time off which is allotted differently (Paid time off for fellows is included in the list below).

1 and 2 year programs:

  • 2 weeks vacation per academic year.   A week is 5 weekdays + 2 weekend days
  • 14 days/equivalent of 2 weeks of sick leave for duration of program

3 to 5 year programs:

  • 3 weeks vacation per academic year. A week is 5 weekdays + 2 weekend days
  • 21 days/equivalent of 3 weeks of sick leave for the duration of the program

Holidays: 
The hospital recognizes the following as paid holidays:  Jan 1, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Dec. 25th.  Fellows may be required to work some holidays, dependent on patient care responsibilities.  No additional compensation (e.g. paid time off or time and a half) is provided to residents and fellows working holidays.

Maternity/Paternity Leave Nationwide Children's provides maternity/paternity leave in keeping with the Family Medical Leave Act.   Eligible fellows may take up to 12 weeks off for the birth or adoption of a child.  Fellows may utilize remaining paid vacation and paid sick days while on maternity/paternity leave in accordance with Nationwide Children's and program policies.  All remaining leave is unpaid.

Depending on program and certification requirements, fellows taking leave beyond their allotted vacation and/or paid sick time off may be required to extend their training.  Fellows requiring leave should consult with their Program Director to determine if they will be required to extend their training.
Funding for relocation Incoming fellows who are relocating from greater than 50 miles outside Columbus, may receive some funding for moving expenses.  Relocation expenses may be taxed (dependant upon state and federal laws).
Reimbursement for Boards Fellows taking initial specialty Boards required for subspecialty certification may be eligible for reimbursement of certification fee.  Check with the Program Director or Nationwide Children's GME Office to verify eligibility.
Professional Conference funding Fellows in good standing are encouraged to attend professional conferences.  Programs receive funding annually for fellows to attend and present at conferences.  Funds may be used toward conference fees, hotel, travel and meals.  Final decisions on conference funds are made by the Program Director.
Statistician support Statisticians are available to Nationwide Children's fellows requiring assistance with preliminary research design/grant preparation, preliminary research analysis, and statistical support of a research protocol.  Apply to the Nationwide Children's GME Office for funds.
Faculty appointment at Ohio State University Fellows in pediatric medical subspecialties are eligible for non-salary Clinical Instructor – Housestaff faculty appointments at The Ohio State University.
Moonlighting opportunities Moonlighting opportunities are available in some fellowships.  Consult the Program Director for details.
Lab coats, lab coat cleaning Fellows receive lab coats during fellowship training.
Paid fees Fees related to Ohio Medical Licensure (FCVS, BCII check, Ohio Training Certificate and renewal or Ohio Medical License and renewal) are covered by the program.
ACLS/PALS/ATLS certification Fellows requiring ACLS, PALS, NRP and/or ATLS have certification and/or recertification paid by program.
Paid memberships Memberships for some professional organizations (e.g. American Academy of Pediatrics) may be covered by the program.  Check with the Program Director to receive a listing of memberships covered.
Food on call Fellows taking 5 or more in house call assignments during a month receive “food on call money”.  Meals and snacks at the Nationwide Children's cafeteria, food court, Subway, KoKo’s and coffee shop can be charged to the fellow’s food on call account using hospital ID.
Resident Center pizza In addition to individual food on call money for fellows taking 5 or more in house call assignments during the month, the Resident Center caters in Papa John’s Pizza 3 nights a week at no charge to residents and fellows taking call.
Food provided at conferences Some conferences may have food provided.  Consult with the Program Director to determine if food is provided for any conferences on a regular basis.

Benefits may change at the conclusion of an academic year.   Applicants to Nationwide Children's fellowship programs should check with the program to confirm benefits available for the year in which they are applying.
