Medical Education
Continuing Medical Education
Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a specific form of continuing education for physicians designed to help practitioners maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field. These activities may include live events, written publications, online programs, audio, video or other electronic media.
Faculty Development for Educators Accreditation
Nationwide Children’s Faculty Development for Educators (FD-ED) accreditation program is an opportunity to broaden physician teaching, assessment and communication skills and develop leadership competencies.
Medical Education Library
The Center for Faculty Development virtual Medical Education Library houses all FD-ED recordings and correlating materials. These downloadable materials are available for faculty to utilize and assist in furthering their medical education. After viewing, faculty members can claim most of the recorded programs and series for FD-ED credit.
Faculty Development for Medical Education
Faculty Development for Medical Education (FD4ME) is an online faculty development and continuing education program by The Ohio State University for busy health professionals and educators committed to teamwork, innovation, excellence and leadership. Faculty can use FD4ME as a way of earning FD-ED credits. Each online module equals one hour of credit.
Mentorship and Career Development
Nationwide Children's is invested in helping faculty find career satisfaction and fulfillment. Part of that journey involves helping faculty connect with a primary or career mentor. The Center for Faculty Development strives to help faculty develop their career growth, and finding a mentor is one of the most important first steps. The Center for Faculty Development provides a mentorship portal for Nationwide Children’s faculty to connect with mentors and mentees.
Through Chronus, faculty have the option to join the Faculty Mentorship Portal, where they are matched to possible mentors or mentees based on their profile. Mentorship connections can utilize Chronus as a basic roadmap for tracking tasks and timelines for mentoring relationships. Faculty can also set personal and professional goals, track mentoring meetings connected to the Outlook calendar, link mentorships to annual reviews and visualize career progress.
The Center for Faculty Development has many other resources to help with career development. Templates are available for curriculum vitae (CV), dossier, or educator portfolio development. Faculty can access them on the hospital's intranet page, ANCHOR, search 'Center for Faculty Development' or contact the Faculty Affairs Coordinator, Sarah Evens, at (614) 722-4462.
Faculty can also take part in the Center for Faculty Development book club. The book club meets quarterly to discuss a new book the committee has chosen to read and is FD-ED credit approved.

Leadership Programs
Sponsorship for faculty at Nationwide Children’s, in the form of recommendations and funding, are available for several local and national leadership development programs and specific educator leadership development courses. Journey to Leadership Excellence Program
Journey to Leadership Excellence (JLE) typically runs over a five-to-seven-month period and consists of a 360-assessment process followed by multiple program days. The program modules promote an environment of collegial interaction, networking, and cross-functional teamwork through classroom, simulated, and team-based action learning and work. Between modules, cohort participants are encouraged to apply what they have learned in the workplace. They have also received leadership development coaching based on the 360 process they complete as part of the program. So far, 142 operational, clinical, research and physician leaders have graduated from JLE.
Medical Leadership Program
The Medical Leadership Program (MLP) is a 12-month leadership program that consists of two monthly in-person sessions of 60 minutes each and includes quarterly peer coaching sessions with an assigned coach. Prior to each class, participants will complete short online assignments to prepare them for each interactive, experiential session. A new addition to MLP is the assignment of a peer coach who will meet with their assigned participants individually three times during the program.
The Ohio State University College of Medicine Faculty Leadership Institute
This 10-month program is a collaboration with The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business to train faculty in the necessary competencies to become principled leaders. Participants can expect to elevate self-leadership skills by exhibiting emotional intelligence and recognizing strengths, challenges and values as a leader, strengthen stewardship skills by developing the ability to initiate and lead change efforts, and improve relational skills by formulating mutually beneficial solutions that build consensus and resolve conflict. A mentored project is an important part of this educational program.
The Ohio State University College of Medicine Educator Development Program
In collaboration with The Ohio State University Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, The Teaching and Leadership Series is a component of the Educator Development Program that combines face-to-face group workshops and independent work to help faculty foster an understanding of teaching and curriculum development as it applies to their professional practice. Enrolled faculty will have opportunities to design and, wherever possible, implement curricula while participating in interactive sessions on the design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based teaching in the health sciences. Pediatric Academic Association
The Pediatric Academic Association, Inc. (PAA) is the Department of Pediatrics faculty practice plan at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is to promote excellence in teaching, research, academics, advocacy, and administrative service, to promote optimum health, and to provide the most effective, efficient and compassionate medical care.
Onboarding
Nationwide Children's is committed to providing the highest quality patient care, pediatric research and service to patients and families. It is why the Center for Faculty Development partners with The Ohio State University College of Medicine to provide a comprehensive onboarding program to ensure that new faculty have a smooth and enjoyable experience as they begin or continue their career.
Promotions and Tenure
- Master Class: The Promotions and Tenure Master Class was designed to inform faculty about the promotion and tenure process, preparation and requirements. We highly encourage those preparing to be promoted in the coming year to watch the series. The series, however, is recommended for all pediatric faculty members.
- Promotion and Tenure: The Ohio State University APT toolbox provides the required items for dossier packets.
- Resources: The Center for Faculty Development provides Promotion and Tenure resource documents, including Faculty Track Chart, CV template, pre-review statement, core dossier template and more, for access when needed.
Women in Medicine and Science
The Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) group meets semi-annually, while the WIMS Collaborative Circles (small groups) meet monthly to help connect and support women faculty across the organization.
The WIMS Collaborative Leaders act as facilitators who lead discussions on topics of interest. The topics are selected from a repository of educational materials available through the WIMS portal. The WIMS Collaborative Circles Leaders who volunteer and dedicate their time to working with women in WIMS attend workshops annually to grow their leadership abilities.
