Heart Clinical Research

Through The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research at The Research Institute, clinicians and scientists work together to match questions developed at the bedside with answers found in the lab. These collaborative endeavors then deliver improvements to treatment options, all in the name of enhancing patient care. This approach ensures that patients receive the latest advances in cardiac care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Help Researchers Create a Tool to Better Communicate Cardiovascular Disease Risk

What’s the purpose of the study?

Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital hope to understand if parents think they are at risk for cardiovascular disease and if so, how they think about their child’s future risk for having the disease. Their goal is to create a visual tool to communicate cardiovascular disease risk.

Who can take part in this study?

You are eligible to participate if:

  • You are the parent of a school-age child (ages 6 to 11 years)
  • Your primary care provider is at Nationwide Children’s
  • You speak and read English fluently

What will happen during the study?

You will:

  • Do a biometric screening (height and weight) during or immediately following your child’s well-child visit
  • Complete a 60-minute virtual interview after your child’s visit (*This is optional)

Will we be paid for participating in the study?

Genetics of Congenital Heart Disease

What is the purpose of this study?

We are currently conducting research to identify genes important for causing congenital heart defects in children. It is our hope that the identification of these genes will lead to new ways to prevent or treat congenital heart disease.

What can participate?

All patients with congenital heart disease are eligible although the current focus is on families with multiple affected members.

What will happen during the study?

The study requires the collection of a blood sample either in the clinic or at the time of heart surgery or cardiac catheterization.
