Help Researchers Understand Driving Behaviors in Teens Using a Smartphone App

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to find out if a phone app can help the learning-to-drive process among teenager and beginner drivers.

Who can take part in this study?

Teens who may be eligible for this study must meet the following:

  • 15.5–17 years old with one parent and/or legal guardian who agrees to participate.
  • Driving permit activated within one month of study enrollment.
  • Has a functioning smartphone compatible for the Behind the Wheel (BTW) app.
  • Speaks and reads English.
  • U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.
  • Agree not to enroll in other driving-related research or use a driving performance app during the study period.

What will happen during this study?

Participants will:

  • Have a smartphone app installed on their cell phone for 18 months. There are 3 versions of the app. You will be randomly selected for one version:
    1. provides individualized feedback on driving errors and a driving safety score each week to reflect driving performance, as well as educational materials on car maintenance;
    2. on top of individualized feedback, driving safety scores and educational materials, it provides reminders on situational supervised driving practices such as driving in the rain or driving at night; and
    3. provides only educational materials.
  • Complete quizzes based on the education materials through the app.
  • Teens and parent/guardian will each complete five surveys over the study.

Will we be paid for this study?
