The Ohio State University Courses
The principal investigators at the Center for Injury Research and Policy also have joint appointments as faculty members at The Ohio State University Colleges of Medicine and Public Health. Our faculty and staff offer a number of different courses on injury topics to students in a variety of disciplines at the university.
Current offerings include:
Introduction in Injury Epidemiology (PUBH-EPI 714)
Injuries, both intentional and unintentional, have been the leading killer of children and adolescents in the United States for decades and are among the leading causes of death for all age groups. Throughout the world, injuries account for high proportions of premature deaths as well as high morbidity rates. Injuries occur in predictable patterns and are preventable, as evidenced by many successful interventions. However, effective prevention strategies must be built upon a sound epidemiologic knowledge of injury rates, patterns of injury, and risk factors for injury.
The course, “Introduction to Injury Epidemiology,” introduces the topic of injury epidemiology through an exploration of epidemiologic knowledge and prevention strategies. After establishing the historical context and public health importance of injury epidemiology, methodological issues will be discussed. Once students have acquired a working knowledge of injury epidemiology research skills, the course will review the current state of knowledge and prevention in an array of important injury topics.
Injury Prevention: A Public Health Problem (PUBH-EPI 4432)
This introductory course in injury prevention and control is designed primarily for upper-division undergraduates. Students will be exposed to/learn to develop skills such as summarizing research findings, translating and communicating these findings to an identified audience, and utilizing policy and advocacy for initiating public health change as it relates to injury prevention and control.
