Meet Dominic

Hometown: Lancaster, Ohio
Age: 7
Diagnosis: Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
It started out like something fairly typical. It seemed like maybe it was a cold or the flu. But it lasted all summer and even little Dominic’s bones were aching. And then that something, which seemed somewhat normal, completely turned his life upside down. On July 30, 2013, five-year-old Dominic was diagnosed with Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Dominic has been receiving chemotherapy since his diagnosis. He has had numerous surgeries and spinal taps as well.  And he still has a ways to go, as he will remain in active treatment until at least July of 2016. “Dominic has always remained tough, strong and positive throughout his treatment so far!” says Carrie, Dominic’s mom.

The Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant Department at Nationwide Children's offers world-class diagnostic, treatment and research facilities that provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care for patients with cancer and acute and chronic blood disorders. It is the largest facility of its kind in Ohio and one of the largest in the United States with annual inpatient admissions and outpatient visits exceeding 13,000 in total. Each year more than 150 patients are diagnosed with cancer at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

“Nationwide Children's hospital has been our beacon of light in one of the darkest times of our life. When Dominic was diagnosed I was upset and heartbroken...but I was so thankful we are so close to such a world renowned children's hospital. Nationwide Children's Hospital has been our home away from home for the last year and a half. From the people at the front desk, security, pharmacy to Dominic's care team, we have been blessed beyond belief with the care he has received,” adds Carrie.

Today, Dominic is seven years old and will be entering second grade at Tarhe Elementary in Lancaster, Ohio in the fall. While he may still have over a year of active chemotherapy ahead of him, he doesn’t let it get him down. He loves the Columbus Blue Jackets. He also enjoys video games and Legos. In fact, when he grows up he would like to be a Lego designer or a video game creator. But right now, this summer, he plans to really enjoy being a Patient Champion for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 and getting to hang out with the amazing teams, drivers and sponsors as they raise funds for Nationwide Children's Hospital and help brighten the future for kids like him everywhere.
