The overall goal of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Adolescent Bariatric Surgery and Childhood Obesity training program is to provide an advanced level of clinical, research, and administrative subspecialty training in the field of weight reduction (bariatric) surgery in the severely obese adolescent population. The purpose of the program to provide the clinical experience, both in the field of childhood and adolescent bariatric surgery as well as the field of general childhood obesity management (i.e. non-surgical options), required to supplement a fully trained pediatric general surgeon wishing to pursue a career focusing on the various treatment options for the morbidly obese pediatric population. Trainees develop skills needed to administer a bariatric surgical program with particular emphasis on administration and leadership principles, biostatistics, experimental design, and quality improvement, and professionalism and systems-based practice, including ethical, economic, & legal issues.
