Veronica Vieland, Ph.D.

Dr. Veronica Vieland is the Vice President for Computational Research and the Director of the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she holds the Battelle Endowed Chair in Quantitative and Computational Biology, and she is a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Statistics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Vieland’s research focuses on the measurement of statistical evidence, both from a theoretical perspective and also as the foundation for understanding human genetic and genomic data.

On the genetics side, her group focuses on statistical methods for discovering the genetic architecture of complex clinical phenotypes. They have developed and implemented a class of novel statistical genetic techniques in the computer package Kelvin, and used Kelvin to study the genetics of numerous clinical conditions, including autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, cleft lip and palate, autoimmune thyroid disease and papillary thyroid cancer. The other arm of this work is the development of the high-performance computational approaches required to utilize the methods. On the theoretical side, her work is currently focused on developing an absolute scale for the measurement of statistical evidence, following the template of the absolute scale for measurement of temperature.

Dr. Vieland received her undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Barnard College and graduate degrees in Philosophy (Mathematical Logic and Philosophy of Science) and Biostatistics from Columbia University, where she also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Child Psychiatry. She has published over 130 papers and presented her work at numerous national and international venues. She has been the recipient of two NIH Career Development Awards, and she is an elected fellow of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

John Burian

John Burian, M.S.

John is Sr. Systems Developer and Technical Lead. He received his MS in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University in 1992. John develops applications and parallel systems for genetic linkage analysis, provides supplemental system administration, and is supervisor for Dr. Vieland’s staff developers. John does woodworking in his spare time.

Sang-Cheol Seok

Sang-Cheol Seok, Ph.D.

Sang-Cheol received his BS and MS degrees in Mathematics at the Pusan National University, Pusan, Korea and a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Iowa. As System Programmer, his research interest covers Data mining, High Performance Computing, Numerical Analysis and Combinatorial Scientific Computing. His current research at the center includes optimizing and regularizing multidimensional numerical integration for calculation of the PPL, a class of statistical models for human genetic studies.

William Valentine-Cooper

William Valentine-Cooper

William has a bachelor’s degree in Computer and Information Science from The Ohio State University, and has worked for over 25 years as a systems architect, developer and project leader in many different industries, especially telecommunications. He has extensive experience with a wide variety of operating systems, languages and tools, and has developed software ranging from high-performance device drivers to accounting systems and cellular network alarm management systems. He will be developing software for the Center research projects, looking into application performance, and providing general technical support as required.

Jo Valentine-Cooper

Jo is a "second-generation computer scientist", formally educated at Bowling Green State University. Jo has 15 years of experience with systems administration, website programming and user technical support using many different computing enviroments. For the Battelle Center of Mathematical Medicine, Jo assists in software development, testing, documentation, quality control and support.
