Biography

As Chief of Mechanical Cardiopulmonary Assist Programs and Academic Affairs in the Cardiovascular Perfusion and ECMO Department, Tom’s current role requires him to provide the necessary vision and planning to move Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) forward in distinct areas of concentration. These areas allow for the research, evaluation, education and implementation of mechanical support modalities at NCH, including multiple ventricular assist devices, ECMO and evolving support modalities. Tom’s clinical and research areas include Gene therapy, anticoagulation, gaseous micro-emboli (GME) presence and attenuation during cardiopulmonary bypass, bloodless cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal support. Tom earned his Bachelor of Science in Circulation Technology from The Ohio State University. He is a Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion with the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology (AmSECT), sits on the AmSECT pediatric committee and is also a Fellow with the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). He also sits as Associate Editor of The Journal of Extracorporeal Technology and on the editorial Advisory Board for Perfusion.
