R. Lawrence Moss, MD, has been named Surgeon-in-Chief at Nationwide Children's Hospital, effective February 1, 2011. He will also be appointed Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine and will serve as the primary surgical liaison between Nationwide Children’s and the OSU College of Medicine.
Prior to joining the medical staff at Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Moss served as Surgeon-in-Chief at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital since 2002 and the Robert Pritzker Professor of Surgery. He also served as Chief of Pediatric Surgery since 2003 and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery since 2007 at Yale University School of Medicine. Under his leadership, Pediatric Surgery was awarded the highest distinction for customer service within the Yale New Haven Health System. Dr. Moss was the Founding Director of Yale Center for Children's Surgical Research and during his tenure total grant funding and National Institutes of Health funding for pediatric surgical research increased significantly. He will bring national leadership of a multi-institutional research network studying Necrotizing Enterocolitis that will capitalize on Nationwide Children's already renowned efforts in this area. Dr. Moss has been the principal investigator on eight grant-funded research projects since 1997, has co-authored 90 journal articles and authored or co-authored 3 books and 24 book chapters.

Dr. Moss received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, completed his surgical residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle and completed fellowships in pediatric surgery, surgical critical care and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) at Northwestern University in Chicago. He and his wife, Kristine, are the parents of three children.
Dr. Moss's predecessor, Donna Caniano, MD, retired in late 2010 having built an outstanding surgical legacy during her 25-year career at Nationwide Children’s.
