Mika Matthews, MD, Honored at AAP Section on Surgery Meeting

Columbus, OH - 11/5/2012

Mika Matthews, MD, received the Jens Rosenkrantz Resident Research Award at the recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Surgery meeting held in New Orleans. Dr. Matthews is a researcher in the laboratory of Gail Besner, MD, in the Center for Perinatal Research in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She is also a general surgery resident in The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine.

Dr. Matthews was honored for her presentation entitled, “HB-EGF Protects the Intestines from Radiation Therapy-Induced Intestinal Injury.”

“Dr. Matthews gave a flawless presentation of her research at the AAP meeting,” said Dr. Besner, Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Director of the Pediatric Surgery Training Program at Nationwide Children’s, and faculty member at OSU College of Medicine where she holds the H. William Clatworthy Jr. Professorship in Surgery. “I am particularly proud of her work because she started the project from its inception and carried it through to presentation and publication of the work – a tremendous achievement.”

Each year at the AAP Section on Surgery meeting, all of the residents in training that were selected to deliver an oral presentation are considered for the Rosencrantz Resident Research Award. The Jens Rosenkrantz Endowment was established in 1986 to honor Jens Rosenkrantz, MD, FAAP, who was a long-standing member of the AAP and a past chair of the Section on Surgery. He was a very well-known and respected academician and clinical surgeon who spent most of his professional career teaching pediatric surgical residents and promoting the importance of post-graduate education and research.

The endowment supports the Section on Surgery’s Annual Resident Awards and is based on the quality of the submitted manuscript, the quality of the oral presentation and the way in which the resident answers the questions from the audience after their presentation. Dr. Matthews won the award for the best basic science presentation.
