In celebration of the opening of Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in 2007 and to recognize the importance of an overall healthy lifestyle, Nationwide Children’s Sports Medicine Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Award was established.
This annual honor is a one-time cash award of $2,500 given to two graduating high school seniors who exemplify a healthy lifestyle, in both mind and body. A “healthy student” understands and demonstrates how fitness and conditioning, injury prevention skills, good nutritional habits and a positive attitude contribute to his or her success.
Applicants are not required to participate in organized team or individual sports. Students who wish to be considered for the 2008 Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Award may download the application at www.NationwideChildrens.org/SportsMedicine, or pick up an application at Nationwide Children’s Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center or the Westerville Community Center.
The following items must be submitted by May 9, 2008:
-Completed and signed application
-Completed essay questions
-High school transcripts
-Two letters of recommendation

Recipients of the award will be notified via phone and letter by May 27, 2008 and will be invited to accept their award at the Westerville City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. June 3, 2008.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center is one of only four sports medicine facilities of its kind in the country and the first in Ohio dedicated solely to providing specially targeted care to young athletes and active kids. The 23,000 square-feet facility includes clinical and procedure rooms; cast and treatment rooms; top-of-the-line x-ray suites; rehabilitation gym and performance center with advanced exercise equipment and multipurpose activity flooring for Personal Best Injury Prevention programs, functional rehab and sports skill training; a track; and basketball area. Services available at the center include radiology, two digital plain-film radiography rooms and clinics for Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition, Gastroenterology and Comprehensive Pain Management. Located in four neighborhood clinics, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine is a team of physicians, athletic trainers and physical therapists specially trained to deal with injuries unique to the student athlete.
