While cardiac intensivists are rare in most pediatric hospitals, their involvement in the treatment of newborns is shown to improve outcomes and enhance overall care for the most medically fragile cardiac patients.
Currently only 12 physicians are trained each year in this relatively young field and Nationwide Children's Hospital is fortunate to have 15. These highly specialized physicians partner with neonatologists to treat newborns with newly diagnosed congenital heart disease and heart anomalies.
