That is at the heart of Nationwide Insurance and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. For more than 50 years Nationwide Insurance has partnered with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to provide lifesaving care to children and their families in our shared community and beyond. In June 2006, Nationwide Insurance Foundation made a monumental $50 million commitment to support expansion of our programs and construction of the new 12-story patient tower that opened this past June. It was one of the largest philanthropic gifts ever from a corporate foundation in the U.S. and also one of the top five largest single gifts ever given to a children’s hospital nationally or internationally. In recognition of the Nationwide Insurance Foundation gift, the hospital voted to re-name the hospital Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
From 2006 to today, Nationwide has helped us keep our promise that no child need ever leave central Ohio for world-class medical care. The partnership has grown exponentially to include monumental events raising millions of dollars for our patients and their families. The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance and Nationwide Children’s have enjoyed a long partnership, dating back to the first playing of the Tournament in 1976. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus have been longtime friends of the hospital, and they wanted the Tournament to reflect that heritage. The Tournament has made gifts of more than $11.6 million to benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and the Memorial Tournament Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is named to honor that generous commitment. The 2012 Tournament was another huge success, raising nearly $1 million for Nationwide Children’s.
In July 2012, the sixth annual Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational raised $625,000 for our patients and families in our Pediatric Cancer Program, bringing the total amount raised since 2007 to $2,725,000. We look forward to the future, as tournament officials recently announced that the Web.com Tour event will now be named the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship and be played September 9-15, 2013. Central Ohio golf fans will enjoy the tournament’s elevated prominence as it will help usher in a new era on the Web.com Tour, serving as host to the third of four tournaments that will determine the 50 players who earn PGA TOUR playing privileges for the 2012-2014 season and their eligibility position under the TOUR’s enhanced qualifying system.
The inaugural Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon was a true success, raising more than $925,000. With more than 18,000 participants flooding the streets of downtown Columbus to run, walk and support our patients and their families this was another testament to the Nationwide and Nationwide Children’s incredible partnership.
The most recent announcement in our expanding partnership is the addition of a new event in the 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200, to be held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This new partnership is yet another demonstration of Nationwide Insurance’s transformational support of Nationwide Children’s and our mission. We thank Nationwide, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and NASCAR for bringing this premier sporting event to central Ohio and for choosing to highlight the hospital as part of it. The NASCAR Nationwide Series is NASCAR’s number two national series, reaching millions of fans as part of the most popular form of motorsports in the U.S. We will be launching a multi-faceted campaign to engage NASCAR fans’ support of Nationwide Children’s through this new relationship. The Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 is set for August 16 and 17, 2013 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Transforming pediatric care in central Ohio and beyond. With Nationwide Insurance and Nationwide Children’s there is no telling what is yet to come. But one thing is for sure; at the heart of it all is helping sick kids and their families.
