Scheduling Process Updates

(From the November 2017 Issue of MedStat)

Requesting an Urgent Appointment using Physician Direct Connect (also known as PCTC)

Every outpatient service at Nationwide Children's Hospital makes the maximal effort to schedule new and existing patients on a timely basis. There are times, however, based on the clinical or social situation, that an urgent, or sooner appointment is needed.

If the scheduling of your patient is not as soon as you feel is necessary, you can call Physician Direct Connect (PDC) at (614) 355-0221 or (877) 355-0221 to schedule an urgent (within five business days) appointment, or a sooner (as soon as the schedule can accommodate) appointment. Please download the guide (PDF) on how to use these services.

Keep in mind several key facts about this special service offered through PDC:

  • For urgent appointment requests, a clinician (not nurses or other staff) should be the person making the call.
  • For both types of requests, the subspecialist does not need to be on the line. The PDC staff can process this request directly.
  • These requests do NOT apply to behavioral health appointments, due to the high demand for these services.

New Psychiatry Scheduling Process for Follow-Up Appointments

Scheduling follow-up appointments for psychiatry services one to three months in advance is challenging, especially considering a family’s busy schedule. To reduce wait times for follow-up appointments and improve access to care, Psychiatry is changing the way they schedule these appointments.

Beginning February 1, 2018, established patients will be able to call the clinic to schedule a follow-up appointment with their provider within 3 to 5 business days of their call. Families should call to schedule their follow-up about 1 week before their medication runs out (their refill date). They will then choose an appointment that works with their schedule.

Until February 1, new referrals will be placed on a temporary waitlist while we work on revamping the scheduling process.

Please note: Because all established patients will be able to get follow-up appointments within 3 to 5 days of calling the clinic, medication refills will not be called in to a pharmacy between visits. Patients will need to be seen to get refills or prescriptions for new medications.

For more information about this program, please see the FAQ insert (PDF).

Appointments are offered at main campus and Westerville clinics. To schedule a same or next day appointment call the Physician Direct Connect Line at (614) 355-0221 or the ENT Clinic at (614) 722-6536.
