Research Now: New Approaches to Prevent Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections

Dr. Sheryl Justice, principal investigator, in the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis, in collaboration with the Rama Jayanthi, MD, Chief, Division of Urology at Nationwide Children’s, is investigating non-antibiotic approaches to prevent recurrent infections. Recurrent infections increase the chances for permanent kidney damage in children. Antibiotics are not always effective at preventing kidney damage even when taking as a preventative. Drs. Justice and Jayanthi are awaiting FDA approval to test a new probiotic that shows promise in reducing the number of bacteria that cause infection and could reduce the rate of recurrent infection. They expect that we will begin the trial later this year.
