Policy Change - Controlled Substances/Prescriptions Drugs

(From the January 2014 issue of Research Now)

Beginning February 1, 2014, due to clarification of rules by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy, researchers will no longer be able to procure aliquots or stocks of controlled substances or prescription drugs from the Animal Resource Core (ARC). Instead, researchers will need to purchase these items directly from the NCH pharmacy by using a Research Medication Requisition formand following the NCH Non-Clinical Drug Handing procedure.

Compliance with all regulations will be the responsibility of researchers, and will be monitored by Research Safety and pharmacy audits.

Important reminders:

  • Controlled substances must be kept under both a locked cabinet/drawer AND within a locked room with limited access and a Controlled Substance Tracking Form (provided upon pickup) must be maintained.
  • All other prescription medication must be kept in a locked cabinet/drawer OR within a locked room with limited access.
  • Expired medications CANNOT be used in animal work.

An informational session regarding the ordering process and regulation requirements will be held in the RB2 Auditorium on January 14 from 10-11am.
