The Center for Gene Therapy and Dr. Gary Smith were among the few to be designated Health Care Heroes this year by Business First.
Business First announced its 2012 list of Health Care Heroes and Nationwide Children’s Hospital faculty came out on top.
Gary Smith, MD, DrPH, was chosen as the honoree in the provider category. According to Business First, “To Dr. Gary Smith, research has a more important purpose than his success. The director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital wants the conclusions he and his colleagues make to influence policy and manufacturing practices. He wants their work to make a safer world for kids… Under Smith’s leadership, the center has influenced governmental policy and product manufacturing.”
The Center for Gene Therapy was chosen in the Innovator – Research category. As noted in Business First, “The Center for Gene Therapy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has unique attributes that have allowed it to make great strides in the investigation and development of gene- and cell-based therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases – conditions caused by genetic mutations. The doctors and scientists working at the center strive to correct the genes responsible for muscle and nerve diseases.”
