New Liver Center Expands Transplant Services

Columbus, OH — November 2017

With the 2017 recruitment of Alexander Weymann, MD, and Monique L. Goldschmidt, MD, Nationwide Children’s enhances its hepatology and transplant services, and launches the new Liver Center. The arrival of Drs. Weymann and Goldschmidt follows the 2016 recruitment of W. Kenneth Washburn, MD, as chief of Abdominal Transplant Surgery. Dr. Washburn also now serves as surgical director of Liver Transplantation services.

Alexander Weymann, MDDr. Weymann, a pediatric gastroenterologist and hepatologist, is the director of the new Liver Center, and medical director of Liver Transplantation. He comes to Nationwide Children’s after 12 years at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Weymann is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Gastroenterology, as well as Pediatric Transplant Hepatology. He is an assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Monique L. GoldschmidtDr. Goldschmidt, also a pediatric gastroenterologist and hepatologist, serves as assistant director of the Liver Center, and assistant medical director of Liver Transplantation. She is also an assistant professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She comes to Nationwide Children’s from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where she completed fellowships in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition and Advanced/Transplant Hepatology.

The new Liver Center is an integral part of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children’s, caring for a wide range of liver diseases through medical management and surgery. Drs. Weymann and Goldschmidt join current hepatologists, Cheryl E. Gariepy, MD, and Carol J. Potter, MD.

A national authority on liver and kidney transplantation, Dr. Washburn has a joint appointment with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, serving as executive director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center and the Division of Transplantation Surgery at Ohio State, and chief of the Section of Abdominal Transplant Surgery at Nationwide Children’s. He also provides national leadership in setting transplant policy, and serves on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) board of directors.
