(From Pediatric Directions, Issue 38)
In June of 2012 Nationwide Children’s Hospital will officially open the new main hospital and a third research building. In the community, new offsite facilities will also open, including a Surgery Center and an Orthopedics Center.
Every aspect of the new main hospital has been considered and perfected to produce the best experience for patients and their families. Nature has been inspirational to the design, particularly using notions of flight, birds and butterflies, which produce a sense of calm, hope and optimism.
Nature elements will appear throughout the building – from a magic forest area with hand carved wooden ‘animal friends,’ to intuitive wayfinding that uses bursts of color and nature elements. In addition, six new acres of green space has been added outside for families, staff and neighbors to enjoy with features including a fragrance maze, story teller garden and a great lawn.
Family-centered care drove the design of the patient rooms. Large, private rooms will comfortably sleep two adult visitors and the en-suite bathrooms have custom designed bathtub/shower combinations. State-of-the-art patient “edutainment” will provide education, entertainment, inpatient services and access to the Internet. To optimize design, full-scale mock-ups were built during the planning phase for families and staff to evaluate. More than 70 changes were made based on their feedback.
A visitor management system will use hotel-style key cards, controlling access by floor and length of stay. Public “on stage” areas are separated from back of house “off stage” areas, minimizing families’ exposure to day-to-day operations. Ohio’s first Level I pediatric trauma center will occupy the new Emergency Department with eight traumaand critical care rooms and a total of 54 exam rooms, making it more than twice the size of the existing ED.
