Nationwide Children’s is one of eight children’s hospital health systems participating in PEDSnet, a clinical data research network that provides the infrastructure to support a national, pediatric-specific learning health system. PEDSNet is funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and led by the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s. A learning health system (LHS) integrates research that is conducted in routine care settings, structured data capture during every encounter, and quality improvement processes, in order to rapidly implement advances in new knowledge, all with active and meaningful patient participation. Disease-specific LHSs have been shown to have a beneficial and significant impact on clinical outcomes, but a national digital architecture to rapidly implement LHSs across multiple pediatric conditions does not currently exist.
