Moments in Nationwide Children's History

(From the October 2017 Issue of MedStat)

From 1894 until the 1940’s, the only admissions at Children’s Hospital were “indigent children.” Most of the other children were treated at home or at other hospitals. In 1941, the Women’s Board (BOT at the time) saw a need to include “carriage trade families” or non-indigent families.

In 1942, Dr. Hardy King (dean at The Ohio State University Medical School) appointed Dr. Leslie Bigelow as chief of staff. A short time later, Dr. Bigelow became the acting dean at the OSU College of Medicine, and Dr. Earl Baxter was named as the first chief of Pediatrics.
