Mark Peeples, PhD, Selected as STEM Exemplar by Ohio Academy of Science

(From the February 2017 issue of Research Now)

As part of the “Believe in Ohio” program, the Ohio Academy of Science selects STEM Exemplars, described as “individuals [who] exemplify believing in Ohio from a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce perspective.” This year, they selected nine additional members to serve as role models for students, including Mark Peeples, PhD, principal investigator in the Center for Vaccines and Immunity at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Believe in Ohio STEM Exemplars are graduates of Ohio high schools, have attended higher education in Ohio or elsewhere, and are now gainfully employed or retired in a STEM field in Ohio. The goal of these individuals to encourage students to pursue STEM careers and become entrepreneurs and innovators.

In addition to serving as a principal investigator at Nationwide Children’s, Dr. Peeples is also a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. His research focus is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the number one cause of hospitalization of children in the developed world and the cause of over 100,000 infant deaths in the developing world each year, as well as a major cause of death in the elderly, just behind the influenza virus. Dr. Peeples' laboratory is working with other scientists at Nationwide Children's and at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine to develop a vaccine that will protect children from RSV disease.
