Mark Hall, MD, FCCM, Representative on 2017 National Guidelines for Pediatric Sepsis Management

(From the June 2017 issue of Research Now)

Mark Hall, MD, FCCM, division chief of Critical Care and principal investigator in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, served on the committee for the 2017 national guidelines for pediatric sepsis management and represented Nationwide Children’s.

The American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) officially released the 2017 national guidelines in May, published in a special article titled “American College of Critical Care Medicine Clinical Practice Parameters for Hemodynamic Support of Pediatric and Neonatal Septic Shock” in the journal Critical Care Medicine. The recently released guidelines are a 2014 update of the 2007 ACCM “Clinical Guidelines for Hemodynamic Support of Neonates and Children with Septic Shock.”

The major new recommendation in the update is the consideration of institution-specific use of 1) a “recognition bundle” containing a trigger tool for rapid identification of patients with septic shock, 2) a “resuscitation and stabilization bundle” to help adherence to best practice principles, and 3) a “performance bundle” to identify and overcome perceived barriers to the pursuit of best practice principles. The Critical Care Medicine publication includes detailed information on the clinical signs and hemodynamic variables that can be used to direct treatment of newborn and pediatric shock.

The ACCM honors individuals for their achievements and contributions to multidisciplinary critical care medicine, and is the consultative body of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) that possesses recognized expertise in the practice of critical care. The College has developed administrative guidelines and clinical practice parameters for critical care practitioners. New guidelines and practice parameters are continually developed, and current ones are systematically reviewed and revised.
