Making the Right Referral for your Obese Patients

(From the April 2014 Issue of MedStat)

Obesity (BMI ≥ 95th percentile) is a growing health concern among children in the United States. The AAP recommends referral to a pediatric tertiary weight management center with a multidisciplinary team to address obesity. Nationwide Children’s offers a range of specialty services to address obesity and related health concerns. We would like to help guide physicians to the program that is most appropriate for an obesity-related referral. Please refer to the fact sheet in your Medical Staff Packet for guidelines concerning pre-referral testing and the criteria for referral to the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition versus the Section of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes. Download the entire physician practice tool on our Resources webpage. Physicians with urgent needs or questions regarding appropriate referrals that are not answered by this practice tool can call the Physician Direct Connect Line at (614) 355-0221 or (877) 355-0221.
