Since 1993, Columbus Business First has recognized young talent in Central Ohio through its annual "40 Under 40" program, which selects 40 honorees who are under the age of 40 based on their outstanding career achievements and community service. A panel of Business First judges evaluated 283 nominations and selected Louise Rodino-Klapac, PhD, principal investigator in the Center for Gene Therapy at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, as one of 40 honorees this year, due to her achievements related to commercialization, innovation, mentorship, and professional and community service.

Her nomination describes her as a young rising star at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's, as she has made significant contributions to musculoskeletal disorders research, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD). These genetic disorders have serious effects on patient lives, and her work has greatly impacted the development of therapies for DMD and LGMD.

In addition to her role as principal investigator in the Center for Gene Therapy, Dr. Rodino-Klapac is also an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. ?As a faculty member, she fosters a collaborative team of graduate and post-doctoral students, and her mentorship has been instrumental in their successful career developments, including several prestigious awards.

Dr. Rodino-Klapac also serves on editorial boards and scientific committees, reviewing peer-reviewed articles, moderating scientific conference sessions, and reviewing grant applications for numerous funding organizations. She has also been very active in community education through the use of social media, educating the patient community on discoveries and related updates in the field, as well as through her involvement with local schools to provide youth science education.

The 2017 class of honorees will be showcased in the May 26 issue of Columbus Business First and celebrated at the 24th Annual 40 Under 40 Gala on Thursday, May 25. For more information on all of the honorees, view the Business First announcement here.
