Leadership Transitions in Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology

(From the August 2017 Issue of MedStat)

Radiology Department Update

The Radiology Department is in the midst of an important transition in leadership. Jerry A. Rusin, MD, in Neuroradiology, and Mark J. Hogan, MD, in Interventional Radiology are stepping down as program leaders. They will both be staying on as faculty to continue to serve patients. Jeremy Jones, MD, will lead Neuroradiology and Patrick Warren, MD, will lead Interventional Radiology.

“It is with special appreciation for their vision, foresight and dedication that I thank Mark and Jerry for their long-lasting services,” said Rajesh Krishnamurthy, MD, chief of the Radiology Department. “They gave us many years of remarkable leadership, and established a strong foundation on which we can build. We now look ahead to the vision and energy of Jeremy and Patrick, the wealth of experience they bring, and their commitment to help us achieve our full potential for serving our patients. ”

Dr. Hogan came to Nationwide Children’s in 1995 to start the Interventional Radiology (IR) Program. Since that time, the case volume has increased from 50 cases per year to more than 6,500 cases per year, making it one of the largest pediatric IR programs in the world. Currently, there are six faculty and three interventional suites. In addition, Nationwide Children’s has become one of the academic leaders in pediatric IR, with innovative approaches to vascular anomalies, vascular access, foreign bodies and musculoskeletal interventions. Dr. Hogan has published more than 110 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts and has mentored numerous faculty across the hospital. He has held multiple leadership positions in pediatric imaging, including being past-president of the Society for Pediatric Interventional Radiology and chairman of the Pediatric Section for the Society of Interventional Radiology. He was instrumental in starting a pediatric IR fellowship at Nationwide Children’s. Through his societal work, he has become a leader in initiating multi-institutional studies and has strongly supported the creation of databases to quantify patient outcomes related to pediatric IR procedures.

Dr. Jerry Rusin had this to say about his time at Nationwide Children’s:

“It has been an incredible journey to see us go from two neuroradiologists reading 2,000 neuro studies, to eight neuroradiologists performing 11,000 studies on seven magnets, including an intraoperative magnet and three state-of-the-art 3T scanners. Although I lament in retrospect that neuroimaging research was sacrificed because of the sheer volume of clinical work and on-call responsibilities, I see that as a necessary part of the growth process to that took us from a sleepy Midwestern pediatric hospital to one of the very best (and largest) in the country. I will always thank Dr. Bill Shiels for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime and for having the vision and personal charisma to create the radiology department that I proudly call my family. I believe we are now entering the second phase of our departmental evolution under new vision and leadership, and I am excited about the immense potential and direction of the neuroimaging section, the new collaborations, the new clinical and research programs, the cutting-edge infrastructural support, and the new Pediatric Advanced Imaging Resource (PAIR) headed by medical imaging scientists. It is a birthing process not without labor pains, but I am sure well worth the final product.  I cannot accept recognition for the neuroimaging section without including others like Lisa Martin, Nick Zumberge, Jim Murakami, Greg Bates, and Brent Adler all who have been the bedrock of the section over the years. To that list can be added incredible MR technologists who have always set a high standard, and always provided services with a smile.”
