Kim McBride, MD, MS, Appointed Chief of Molecular and Human Genetics at Nationwide Children's Hospital

(From the March 2017 issue of Research Now)

Kim L. McBride, MD, MS, has been named chief of the Division of Molecular and Human Genetics at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He succeeds Dennis Bartholomew, MD, who has served as chief since June 2007 and will continue to serve as section chief.

Dr. McBride is a physician in the division and the director and founder of the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic at Nationwide Children's, where he is also a principal investigator in the Center for Cardiovascular Research at The Research Institute. In addition, Dr. McBride is an associate professor of Pediatrics and a member of the faculty for the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program and Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology Graduate Program at The Ohio State University.

Prior to joining Nationwide Children's in 2004, Dr. McBride was an assistant professor in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan and completed a general internship at Regina General Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and pediatric residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He also completed fellowships in Clinical Genetics and Clinical Biochemical Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also earned a Master’s degree in the Clinical Scientist Training Program.

Dr. McBride’s research focuses on complex genetic disorders, particularly the causes of congenital heart defects. His clinical interests also include the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases, particularly for inborn errors of metabolism. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has a long history of extramural funding, including current funding from the NIH. He is vice-chair of the Therapeutics Committee of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics and the Observational Safety Monitoring Board for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry Study Group.

Dr. McBride's national expertise in the field of genetics makes him an excellent successor for the role of division chief in the Division of Molecular and Human Genetics, and he has a strong foundation for advancing our work in partnership with the new Institute for Genomic Medicine.
