The routine for follow up on positive newborn sickle cell screenings has required further testing by hemoglobin electrophoresis. The Nationwide Children’s lab has also performed another screen along with this electrophoresis, but often reported prior to the electrophoresis report. This process has allowed for some past confusion. Nationwide Children’s ChildLab will now report both tests at the same time to hopefully eliminate the confusion.
