Finance and Sponsored Projects: Why Effort Reporting is Important

We have an obligation to the federal government to properly use federal funds for the conduct of research.  Here are some things to keep in mind about effort reporting.

Please remember, when you are asked to certify your time and efforts, it is because we have an obligation to the Federal government to properly use federal funds for the conduct of research.  A few important points to keep in mind:

  • The effort expended on a project must meet the commitment made in the approved budget for that project
  • It is important that the individual approving effort reports have actual knowledge of the effort expended on the project
  • Effort is not hours; it is the percentage of time expended on a project.  All effort on all activities cannot exceed 100 percent
  • Effort reports are published on the 10th of the month for the previous month’s allocation. Please make sure to review and let your SPO know of any changes needed by the 18th of the month
