Before he was even born, Marcus Harris’ mother Valerie knew her son would arrive in the world with a life-threatening heart problem, Hypo-Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. The left side of his heart would never develop on its own and without immediate surgery, he would not survive. That’s why, prior to her delivery, Valerie traveled to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, more than eight hours away from her home in North Carolina.
At the recommendation of many major medical centers, she turned to Dr. Mark Galantowicz, Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Galantowicz is an internationally recognized leader in bloodless open heart surgery, which was important to the Harris family.
After his initial successful surgery in 2006, Marcus continued to visit Nationwide Children’s for five additional surgeries and follow-up care. The last time was by emergency, when he developed a serious irregular heart rhythm.
Although Marcus continues to face challenges with his heart condition, he’s got a quick sense of humor that keeps his family laughing. He is a very loving child, as well as an aspiring artist.
