John T. Kissel, MD, is an attending neurologist at Nationwide Children’s and co-director of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Spinal Muscular Atrophy Clinic. He is a Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and works with patients in the SMA Clinic and conducts clinical trials in the Research Department. His background comprises numerous achievements in medical studies, teaching, writings and awards. Among the highlights: co-director of both the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic and the ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Clinic at OSU, and presidency of the Neuromuscular Section of the Academy of Neurology, 2004-2007. He has published on a wide range of peripheral nerve, muscle, and anterior horn cell disorders, including co-authorship of the text, “Diagnosis and Management of Peripheral Nerve Disorders.” Recognitions include Irwin Levy Neurology Resident Teaching Award from Barnes Hospital, The Ohio State Neurologist of the Year Award (1993), and the Neurology Teaching Award from the Ohio State University Medical Center (2007). Named among the “Best Doctors in America,” Dr. Kissel serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Families of SMA and the International Coordinating Committee for SMA.
