Happy Healthy Preschoolers

March 2010 Happy Healthy Preschoolers Workshops

Are you the parent of a child 1-6 years of age?
Do you want them to feel and do their best?
Join other parents in the Happy Healthy Preschoolers program!

The FREE Happy Healthy Preschoolers (HHP) program offers parents of children ages 1 to 6 help on choosing healthy foods for their children and ways to keep them active. These one-hour sessions, taught by community volunteers, bring parents together to learn and share successful ways to make healthy eating and active play a daily, life-long habit. Classes are once per week for six weeks.

Classes are NOT lecture-style. Instead, lessons provide time for hands-on activities, group discussions about key messages for simple and most effective lifestyle changes as a family, and group problem-solving among parents in order to build a sense of community.

During the six-week program, you will learn:

  • How to get your child to eat new and healthier foods.

  • How much food is enough for your child’s age and nutrition needs.

  • How to compare foods using nutrition labels.

  • The best nutrition for your personal budget.

  • What screen time is and how much is enough.

  • Ways to make play time into exercise.

The HHP program is a fun way to build healthy habits for your family. Working together, we will find ways to make your child the healthiest he or she can be, and provide them with a healthy future.

Evidence-based key messages parallel Nationwide Children’s Hospital Ounce of Prevention, New U, and New U Jr. programs creating a seamless and long-term path for parent/child nutrition and physical activity education. The six lessons include the following topics:

Eating Breakfast

  • Learn how to incorporate a fast and healthy breakfast into your child's busy morning using label reading, portion size activities, and product/price comparisons.

Healthy Beverages

  • Includes specific activities on portion size. Know what beverages to offer first, pouring activities and product comparison.

TV Alternatives

  • Includes strategies for successfully offering TV alternatives especially after school and on weekends.

Healthy Snacking

Play-cation

  • Includes tools for finding free/low cost safe and fun local activities for the whole family (vs. a vacation). Receive a calendar of local events.

Eating Dinner as A Family

  • Includes specific info about best choices from fast food menus, benefits of eating as a family, and how to get your family to eat as a family.
