Research Interests Researchers theorize that patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), who experience frequent abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation, have abnormal movement within in their gut and are extra sensitive to feeling these changes. Gastroenterologist Jonathan Gisser, MD, believes that an attack on the enteric nervous system (ENS) causes these sensitivities. He’s collecting blood samples from children with IBS and other GI disorders. Their blood is then mixed with an artificial, in vitro version of the ENS to see if attacking antibodies are present. If these antibodies prove to be more common in kids with IBS, new diagnostic tests could be developed and new research could test whether or not blocking these antibodies could prevent IBS symptoms.
