Research Interests Dr. Honegger’s research is focused on understanding the role of T-cell immunity in the vertical transmission of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Vertical transmission (passage from mother to child during pregnancy or birth) of HCV occurs in approximately 5% of pregnancies to HCV infected mothers and is now the leading route of infection in children. Although T-cell immunity is known to be critical for control of acute infection in adults and animal models of HCV, the roles of maternal and infant T-cell responses in preventing vertical transmission and reasons for their failure remain unknown. To address these issues Dr. Honegger is studying ex-vivo T-cell responses to HCV antigens in a cohort of HCV-infected pregnant women and their subsequent infants.
