Brief Description of Infectious Diseases:

The Section of Infectious Diseases provides consultation and treatment for children with all types of acute, recurrent and chronic infections. Patients are evaluated and managed following referral to the Outpatient Infectious Diseases Clinic, the inpatient Infectious Diseases unit, or any other clinical care unit in Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

  • HIV and related infections
  • Recurring infections
  • Immunodefiency disorders - suspected and proven
  • Kawasaki disease
  • Chronic infections
  • Unexplained febrile illnesses
  • Any acute infection
  • Exposure to HIV infection (perinatal or other)
  • Unexplained skin rashes
  • Hospital-associated infections
  • Opportunistic infections

Services Available:

  • Ambulatory evaluation and treatment of physi-cian-referred patients

  • Pre- and post-adoption evaluation of the internationally adopted child

  • HIV screening (pre-test and post-test counseling)

  • In-hospital consultation on any patient with a potential infection

  • In-hospital evaluation and treatment of patients who are admitted to the Infectious Disease Unit from the Emergency Department or physician referred

  • Medical care of HIV- infected children and parents

  • Outpatient evaluation and management of patients with possible infections

  • Outreach education

  • Phone consultations with physicians who have
    patient-related questions about infections or
    immunizations

  • Prenatal counseling of HIV-infected pregnant women

  • Psychosocial services for HIV-affected families

  • Support groups

Outreach & Support Services:

  • Our physicians frequently provide lectures and telephone consultation for community hospitals, physicians and other agencies on topics such as immunization updates, HIV-related infections, or specific infectious disease topics.

  • HIV outreach education (perinatal, adolescents) to medical professionals and lay persons

  • Case management

  • Nutrition

Octavio Ramilo Appointed as New Chief 

Octavio Ramilo, MD, has been appointed chief of Infectious Diseases at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He will direct a wide range of services in the Section of Infectious Diseases including consultation, diagnosis and management of children with acute and chronic infections or immune-deficiency disorders. Dr. Ramilo will also have an appointment within the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dr. Ramilo has been involved in translational and clinical research related to the role of the host immune response in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases for over 20 years. His current research is focused on pathogenesis and treatment of respiratory infections, especially RSV, and the application of genomics technologies in the clinical setting for improving diagnosis and understanding of host responses to microbial pathogens.

Dr. Ramilo currently serves on the editorial board of Anales Españoles de Pediatría and is an Ad Hoc reviewer of several peer-reviewed scientific journals. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Pediatric Infectious Disease Foundation.
