Richard E. Kirschner recruited to lead Plastic Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Nationwide Children’s Hospital continues to attract nationally distinguished physicians and scientists.

Last week, Richard E. Kirshner accepted our offer to serve as Chief of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Cleft Lip and Palate-Craniofacial Institute. He will also be Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dr. Kirschner currently practices at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where he has held the Mary Downs Chair for Craniofacial Treatment and Research and has served as Director of both the Cleft Lip and Palate Program and Plastic Surgery Research. He has also served as Program Director for Plastic Surgery at The University of Pennsylvania. He is nationally recognized as a leading authority in cleft lip and palate, resonance disorders, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, and vascular malformations. He is actively involved in research and teaching and will pursue both of those interests in his role here at Nationwide Children’s.

We expect Dr. Kirschner’s arrival in spring, 2010, and his credentialing and state licensing are already underway.

This recruitment would not have been possible without the efforts of our search committee, chaired by Dr. Gail Besner, Professor of Pediatric Surgery, and collaboration with The Ohio State University, as represented by Dr. Michael Miller, Chair of OSUCOM Plastic Surgery.

We want to extend recognition to Dr. Robert Ruberg, who is retiring as our current Chief of Plastic Surgery. During more than three decades of outstanding service to both Nationwide Children’s and The Ohio State University, Dr. Ruberg has provided outstanding leadership. He has been instrumental in the programs success to-date and build an outstanding foundation for future growth. We commend him for his service.

Dr. Kirschner attracts a national and international patient base. Pending his arrival, patients can make inquiries through our Welcome Center to assist with appointment scheduling. The Welcome Center can be reached by calling 1-800-792-8401 (ext-59866) or via the Welcome Center webpage.
