Brief Description of Anesthesiology:

The Department manages anesthesia care for the entire spectrum of surgical diseases from complex congenital heart surgery through solid organ transplantation.

  • Pre-op tours and instruction for children and caregivers, including same-day surgery patients

  • Anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including MRI, CT scan and invasive radiology

  • Intra-operative anesthesia for all types of neonatal and pediatric surgical procedures

  • Peri-operative management including invasive hemo-dynamic monitoring and life support

  • Anesthesia consultation including airway management and respiratory care

  • Acute post-operative pain management including:

  • Continuous epidural analgesia

  • Epidural or caudal analgesia

  • Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)

Surgical Facilities

Nationwide Children's Hospital Outpatient Surgery and Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center provide outpatient, same-day surgery for patients, from birth through age 21. These child-friendly facilities are both designed to reduce the worry and stress of surgery for patients and their families.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Outpatient Surgery is located in the main hospital, with surgery and recovery occurring within the Main Operating Room at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center, a freestanding outpatient surgery facility, is right next door on the campus of Nationwide Children's Hospital. If surgery is scheduled for Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center, preoperative registration, surgery and postoperative recovery all take place in the Surgery Center.

Anesthesia is provided by pediatric anesthesiologists who have extensive training in the care of young patients - their expertise is one of our greatest assets. Nurses and other clinical staff are also specially trained and dedicated to the special needs of children.
