Celebrating our 22nd year, this year's program features keynote speakers, Dr. Stefano Guandalini and Carol Fenster.

Separate educational tracks are offered for adults, teens and school-age children. Free child care is available for children ages 2-6.

  • Keynote Speaker:

    Stefano Guandalini, MD.
    Dr. Guandalini is Professor of Pediatrics, Section Chief, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and Founder/Director, University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. He is an internationally known expert on celiac disease and his efforts have greatly influenced the way celiac diease is diagnosed and treated today. His work conributed to the revision of the 20-year old guidelines for celiac diagnosis. He currently serves as President of the Federation of International Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

    Carol Fenster
    What began 20 years ago as a solution to Carol's own gluten intolerance has turned into an internationally recognized position as a leading expert on gluten-free cooking. The author of 8 cookbooks, she also develops gf products for leading manufacturers. Her latest book is

  • 1000 Gluten-Free Recipes
  • (Wiley 2008), she has delivered seminars to Disney and has been published in Reader's Digest, CNN.com and more. Carol holds a degree in Home Economics from the University of Nebraska and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Denver, where she was a faculty member.


    Presenters:
    Steve Plogsted,PharmD
    Steve is a pharmacist on staff at Nationwide Children’s Hospital who has taken a special interest in the prescription and over the counter medication needs of patients with Celiac Disease. Steve’s medication update has become a favorite among conference participants. He has spoken at numerous regional and national conferences on the topic of medication and the Celiac patient.

    Mary Kay Sharrett, MS, RD, LD, CNSD
    Mary Kay is a Clinical Dietitian at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and resident expert on the Celiac diet. She has served on the conference planning committee since its inception and is the clinical liaison to the Gluten- Free Gang Support Group that meets at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She has become a popular speaker at national and regional conferences and a favorite interview among the popular press.

    Jay Thurston
    Jay is the creator and administrator behind the Gluten-Free Post, a website designed to review the best in gluten free news, foods and restaurants. He will participaet in teen and school age workshops

    Registration Fees:

    $35 per person for registrations postmarked by September 18 early registration deadline.
    After that date, registration fee is $40 per person.
    Children 11 and under attend free.
    Payment can be made by cash, check, Visa or Master Card. Registration fee includes:
    Educational materials and activities, lunch and snack breaks. We recommend early registration as the conference fills quickly.

    Intended Audience:

    Progam is open to adults with celiac, parents of children with celiac, teens, children with gluten-intolerance and any other interested individuals.

    Inclement Weather:

    This program will be held rain,snow or shine!

    Parking:

    Main Campus parking is available in the garage near the Education Center. Parking costs 1 token. Tokens are available for purchase in the garage for $2 each.

    Child Care:

    Children ages 2-6 will be provided with a variety of fun activities during the day and will join their parents for lunch. Child care opens at 8:30 am. Parents eat lunch with their child at 12 noon am and child care resumes at 1 pm until 4 pm.
    We are sorry however we are unable to provide supervision for children under the age of 2 or those who are not potty trained.

    Confirmation/Cancellations:

    A confirmation letter with directions to the class will be sent to all participants registered two weeks before the program. After that time, no confirmation will be sent.

    Cancellation Policy

    Cancellations must be received two weeks prior to the class. At that time, refunds will be made minus 30% for administrative costs. No refunds will be given after that time.

    Additional Information:

    A special track is designed for teens (12 and older) and school age kids (7-11). Teen program will include a cooking class, T-shirt decorating, e-sites, scavenger hunt with vendors, fitness fun and more.

    School-age program consists of learning about celiac disease, cooking class, scavenger hunt, fitness fun and more.

    Recipes If you have a gluten-free recipe you are willing to share with others, e-mail it to communityeducation@nationwidechildrens.org no later than October 16 and we will include it in our recipe book for all program participants.

    Smoke-Free

    We are a smoke-free institution. Smoking and tobacco products cannot be used inside Nationwide Children's Hospital buildings or grounds.
