Department of Pediatrics 2005 Report

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Nationwide Children’s Hospital continues to celebrate unprecedented success – from the number of patients we serve and people we employ, to our ambitious facility expansion and an increasing national reputation. Since our beginnings as a five-room institution 116 years ago, we’ve become one of the largest children’s hospitals and pediatric research centers in the world.

We are pleased to share with you the 2007 joint report for the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. 2007 was an exciting and productive year for the Department of Pediatrics and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Twenty-four new faculty joined the department to enhance our clinical, research and educational programs. Clinical leaders in Dermatology, Rheumatology and Chronic Pain highlighted our clinical recruitments. We also added Divisions of Sports Medicine, Hospital Medicine and Child and Family Advocacy. While we will always be steadfast in our role as the safety net for central Ohio’s children, we are gaining prominence as the go-to institution for families from throughout the United States and beyond. Thanks to the enduring relationship we enjoy with The Ohio State University, our teaching and research are setting new standards. We are gratified by the growing number of world-class physicians and scientists who choose to pursue their professional aspirations at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, further extending our unparalleled level of care and our unmatched atmosphere of scientific inquiry.

While much is changing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, our commitment to providing the best care possible regardless of a family’s ability to pay will always be our driving force. I appreciate the time you take to review this annual report to learn of the many ways Nationwide Children’s Hospital is achieving the best in pediatric care.

Sincerely,
Steve Allen, MD

Our research program continues to excel under the leadership of Dr. John A. Barnard, Vice Chair of Research and President of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In 2007, total external research funding and NIH prime funding increased by 20% and 17%, respectively, over our funding in 2006. This growth will be enhanced by the recent successful application with The Ohio State University College of Medicine for the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) (Dr. John A. Barnard is co-PI).

Our training programs continue to develop the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. In 2007, we initiated a fellowship in Endocrinology. This brought our total number of fellows in 2007 to 61. We have been approved for fellowships in rheumatology and adolescent medicine. The department is excited about our growth and the on-going innovations. However, our values remain steadfast: highest quality of clinical care for children; research innovation to secure a better life for our children; advocacy to ensure children have access to care and services that they need; and educational programs to develop the next generation of pediatric health providers.

Sincerely,
Michael Brady, MD
Chair, Department of Pediatrics,
