National Health Coverage & Income Assistance Programs

Medicare

• Provides health care coverage for people with long-term disabilities (and most Americans age 65 and older).

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

• Provides income to people who are no longer able to work because of a disability; benefits are based on a person’s work history. People who receive SSDI are eligible for Medicare after 2 years.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

• Provides health care coverage to uninsured children in families with incomes that are too high to qualify for Medicaid.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

• Provides a monthly stipend to people with disabilities (and low-income Americans age 65 and older) to help meet basic needs for food, shelter and clothing. Individuals who receive SSI are often eligible for Medicaid.

Children with Special Healthcare Needs

• Provides assistance for health coverage to children with special health problems, like cystic fibrosis. Families that do not qualify for Medicaid may be eligible for this program.

Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH)

The Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH) is a health care program in the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). BCMH links families of children with special health care needs to a network of quality providers and helps families obtain payment for the services their children need.
