Bone Mineral Density in Young Women with Sickle Cell

What is the purpose of this study?

We want to look at the effects of different birth control methods on bone health in young women with sickle cell.

Who can participate in this study?

  • We are looking for young women between the ages of 12-29 years who have sickle cell disease.
  • We are looking for women who are on birth control AND women who are not. These women should be between 12-29 years of age and have sickle cell disease.

What will happen during the study?

  • There are two (2) study visits at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
    • They will be six (6) months apart and will last about two (2) hours each.
    • Each visit will require a blood draw, answering a few questions, and having a DEXA scan.
  • All testing is at no cost to participants.
  • Participants will be compensated for their time.

What is a DEXA scan?

  • A DEXA scan is a quick, non-painful test that allows us to look at the health of your bones.
