Ohio Injuries: Children Ages 0-4 Years

Injuries are a leading cause of death and disability among children 0-4 years of age in Ohio. Not only are injuries the leading cause of death for this age group, but non-fatal injuries have considerable long-term medical and economic consequences. Increased efforts to prevent injuries to children are necessary as the number of injuries continues to rise. The following data come from the Injury in Ohio report.*

Health Care Resource Utilization

  • From 2005 through 2007, injuries to children ages 0-4 years resulted in an annual average of:
    • 112,293 Emergency Department Visits
    • 10,476 EMS Runs
    • 2,422 Inpatient Hospitalizations
    • 148 Fatalities

  

  • The number of emergency department visits due to injuries increased 7.8% from 2005 to 2007

Injury-Related Hospitalizations

  • Injury-related hospitalizations in 2005-2007 resulted in an annual average of:
    • $47 million in hospital charges
    • 10,649 days of hospitalization
  • Mean length of stay was 4.4 days
  • Mean length of stay and hospital charges were slightly higher for males compared with females

  • Mean hospital charges per patient increased by 57.5% from 2005 to 2007

Location at Time of Injury

  • Young children ages 0-4 years are at greatest risk for unintentional injuries in the home environment


Fatalities

  • 445 children 0-4 years old in Ohio died as a result of injury from 2005 to 2007
    • 74.2% of these deaths were unintentional
  • The leading causes of death due to injury for children 0-4 years old in Ohio were:

Mechanisms of Injury

  • 31.8% of EMS runs were due to injuries sustained during falls, and another 17.5% were due to injuries sustained in motor vehicle traffic crashes
  • Falls led to more emergency department visits, trauma admissions and inpatient hospitalizations than any other mechanism of injury
