About Children's Pharmacy Department

The Department of Pharmacy staff consists of more than 165 FTE pharmacists, technicians and support staff.


As we take our Pharmacy from better to best, the 2020 goals of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Department of Pharmacy are to:
  • Conduct medication reconciliation in at least 95 percent of patients within 24 hours of admission and prior to discharge
  • Provide specialty pharmacy services for two clinics and an infusion clinic
  • Ensure 100 percent of Advanced Patient Care Pharmacists are credentialed, and, if eligible, privileged
  • Deploy four additional ambulatory clinical pharmacists to clinics, as driven by data
  • Provide 100 percent of services with primary rounding or multidisciplinary review
  • Employ 50 pharmacists who provide direct inpatient patient care
  • Eliminate all preventable medication errors

Services and Technology

The Department of Pharmacy provides the following services:

  • Twenty-four hour pharmacy services
  • Pharmacy response to all medical emergencies and Level I traumas
  • Innovative ambulatory pharmacy services: Outpatient pharmacy, Primary Care and Specialty Pharmacy Services
  • Two outpatient pharmacies serving the hospital/ED discharge patients and ambulatory clinic patients 
  • Unit-dose distribution
  • Centralized compounded sterile preparations program
  • Investigational drug studies
  • Satellite pharmacies: Intensive Care Unit, Hematology/Oncology and Operating Room
  • Decentralized pharmacist services for the Emergency Department

Pediatric clinical pharmacists round daily with specialized interdisciplinary teams in the following areas:

  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Cardiology
  • Cardiothoracic Intensive Care
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Neonatology/Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Nutrition Support
  • Pediatric Intensive Care
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Neuosciences
