Neurology Chief Co-authors Leading Stroke Textbook
The first modern stroke textbook, Cerebrovascular Disorders, was published in 1967. Now, more than 40 years later and five editions, a new edition has been released for both specialists and residents.

The sixth edition has been completely revised by lead author E. Steve Roach, MD, chief of Neurology and vice-chair of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children's, and his fellow co-authors, to keep pace with the rapid expansion of knowledge in stroke care. Study on Becker Muscular Dystrophy
Investigators in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s have identified a link between specific modifications of the dystrophin gene and the age of cardiac disease onset in patients with Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD).

Gene Therapy For Muscular Dystrophy Shows Promise Beyond Safety
Researchers have cleared a safety hurdle in efforts to develop a gene therapy for a form of muscular dystrophy that disables patients by gradually weakening muscles near the hips and shoulders. "We think this is an important milestone in establishing the successful use of gene therapy in muscular dystrophy," said Jerry Mendell, MD, director of the Center for Gene Therapy in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s and the lead author of the study.

Funding Announced for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy Research
Scott Harper, PhD, principal investigator in the Center for Gene Therapy at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's, has been awarded the first Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) Society Jacobs Family Research Fellowship Grant. Funding will help researchers study a gene that plays in the development and progression of FSHD.

Neuromuscular Clinic Selected for MDA Clinical Research Network
The Muscular Dystrophy Association medical clinic at Nationwide Children's has been selected to become part of MDA's new Clinical Research Network. This new network consists of 10 elite MDA medical clinics that will function as clinical research centers.

Guidelines Show Differences Between Child, Adult Stroke
A statement published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association says, "Children and adolescents with stroke have remarkable differences in presentation compared with adults," according to E. Steve Roach, MD, Neurology Chief at Nationwide Children's.

Kissel Named Co-director of SMA Program
John Kissel, MD, has been appointed to the position of co-director of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Program. Serving alongside Chang-Yong Tsao, MD, Dr. Kissel brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge working with patients suffering from spinal muscular atrophy. Corey Raffel, MD, PhD, Named Chief of Neurosurgery

Kosnik Named Neurosurgeon of the Year
Edward J. Kosnik, MD, FACS, FAAP, Associate Medical Director of the Department of Surgery and former Chief of Neurosurgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, was honored with the Ohio Neurosurgeon of the Year Award by the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society (OSNS) at the Society’s annual meeting September 29. He is also a Clinical Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dr. Albert Tsao Named Nationwide Children's Hospital Physician of the Year

Dr. Albert Tsao was named the first Nationwide Children's Hospital Physician of the Year at the annual Children’s Awards Banquet in January. Dr. Tsao was nominated and selected by Children’s employees. 

This is the first year that Children’s employees have had the opportunity to recognize one of the Medical Staff.  The Physician of the Year Award recognizes a physician who provides the highest quality of clinical care, promotes teamwork and staff involvement, demonstrates excellence in teaching, and embraces the mission of Children’s Hospital.
