Rotator Cuff Tears and Strains
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Subscapularis, and Teres Mino) that help reinforce the shoulder joint and increase its stability.  They also work together to move the arm in many activities that require overhead motions.  A rotator cuff injury is a strain or tear in this group of muscles that can result from using your arm to break a fall, lifting heavy objects, or use of your shoulder in sports with a repetitive movement such as baseball, football, swimming and tennis.  Symptoms include arm and shoulder pain, weakness and loss of shoulder movement especially with overhead activities.  Initial treatment includes activity modification, Rest, and Ice.  If you are uncertain about the nature of your condition or your condition does not improve with conservative treatment please contact your primary care provider or for more specialized care contact Children’s Sports Medicine.
