Patellar Subluxation
A subluxing patella (kneecap) is a temporary sliding of the kneecap out of it’s normal position in the center of the thighbone causing swelling and pain.  This sliding motion can be a result of a direct blow to the area but more commonly it is a result of poor knee biomechanics and alignment.  Often times these mechanical factors must be corrected to avoid recurring episodes.  The symptoms include pain around or underneath the knee cap that can be accompanied by the knee giving way when walking.  The initial treatment is Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation and should be followed by further medical evaluation.   If you are uncertain about the nature of your condition, contact your primary care provider or for more specialized care contact Children’s Sports Medicine.
